Languages and country desks

A global architecture with editorial quality gates: local issues, local language, the right search engine, no empty pages indexed.

Published country desks and preparing editions

Each country-language pair has its own address. A country marked preparing has no indexed local investigation yet. We do not publish machine-translated empty articles to create an appearance of global coverage.

Which search engines matter?

Our default organic-search strategy applies to countries where Google is the leading engine. Country desks with a substantial alternative-search audience need additional discovery and search-engine registration: Naver for South Korea, Yandex for Russia and Baidu or other domestic systems for mainland China. Search statistics are not fixed forever, so this is a monitoring and editorial decision, not a permanent restriction.

Search strategy is not the same as monetisation

A country can have high Google market share but lower advertising revenue per visitor. Decisions to expand consider local business demand, reader intent, content production and legal costs, and the real possibility of ranking for useful queries. Search engine share is one input, never a guarantee of traffic or AdSense earnings.

Language catalogue for future expansion

The system can add many writing systems and national variants. The entries below are language capabilities and candidates, not a claim that CountryWhy has released investigative reporting in every language.

For multiple markets sharing a language, separate country editions are justified only if the story, legislation or search intent differs. We use region-specific addresses and distinguish independent local analyses from true translations. Only genuine translations of the same article should be linked as equivalent-language versions.
